Whataburger Rolls Out Their New Menu Items

In the world of fast food, restaurant chains tend to play follow the leader when it comes to menu changes. McDonalds, Burger King, and Taco have all changed their menus recently and now it is time for Whataburger to follow suit. Whataburger has added new salads and has a new Under 550 calories section on their menu. Will it help business?

Whataburger is touting new changes for their menu that go into effect for the Fourth Of July Holiday. One of the new changes is a section on their menu called the “Under 550 Calories”. There are 13 items in this section which are:

  • Taquito with Bacon And Egg
  • Grilled Chicken Sandwich
  • Chicken Fajita Taco
  • Biscuit With Bacon
  • Biscuit With Sausage
  • Egg and cheese Biscuit
  • Egg Sandwich
  • Cinnamon Roll
  • Biscuit And Jelly
  • Whatburger Jr With Bacon and Cheese
  • Double Meat Whataburger Jr with Cheese
  • Grilled Chicken Melt
  • Whatacatch Sandwich

This menu has a wide variety of food types for people looking for a healthier choice. The interesting fact is that none of these items except the Double Meat Whataburger Jr with Cheese are new additions to Whataburger. Most of these items have been available for quite some time now. They were just moved to a different place on the menu.

If you are looking for new items on the menu, then check out the salad selections. The new additions are the Garden Salad and the Apple & Cranberry Chicken Salad. The Apple & Cranberry Chicken Salad has only 260 calories, 9g of fat, and 200mg sodium. This would be a healthy addition to any diet. The Garden Salad becomes a different story if you add grilled chicken to it. It weighs in at 400 calories and 18g of fat. The real red flag is the 1420mg of sodium. That is more than 60% of a day’s worth of sodium in just one salad.

If you like chicken, Whataburger is offering several new items in that category. The Grilled Chicken Melt has grilled chicken, onions, Poblano and red peppers, and melted Monterey Jack cheese. It has 460 calories, 22g fat, and 1330mg sodium. Add fries to it and you have almost hit your day’s limit of fat and sodium.

Whataburger has also added Whatachick’n Bites. They are basically their answer to McDonald’s Chicken Nuggets. The meal includes Texas toast and cream gravy. The nutritional numbers are staggering. The 9-piece meal has 1460 calories, 60g fat, and 2410mg sodium.

The Jalapeno & Cheese Whataburger is a new addition to the burger menu. It has 730 calories, 39 calories, and 2120mg sodium. That is the 2nd highest amount of sodium of any burger on the menu.

The kids menu also has new additions. The Whatachick’n bites 4 piece meal has 500 calories, 25g of fat, and 1240mg sodium. Although you would not consider this a healthy meal for a child, the other new menu offer is pretty scary. The grilled cheese meal has 760 calories, 31g fat, and 1460mg sodium. These numbers are way too high for one meal for a small child.

Whataburger’s new menu is more of a “rearrangement” of current items rather than an influx of new offerings. If you have eaten at Whataburger recently then you won’t notice much different. There are still plenty of high fay and high calorie items to choose from.
